Our oral health, like our overall health, begins with what we put into our bodies. Here are some good ideas for a mouth-healthy diet.

Water: It is tempting to add citrus to your water for flavor, but plain water is best. If you want to infuse your water, use less acidic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Try fun flavors such as rosemary watermelon, blueberry cucumber, or apple cinnamon. Fluoridated water is particularly useful for dental health, as it provides fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel. All water washed away food debris and food particles from your teeth and gums, which denies cavity-causing bacteria their food.

Calcium-Filled Foods: Make sure you get lots of calcium filled foods in your diet. Calcium helps build tooth enamel, strengthening your teeth against cavities. Dairy is an excellent source of calcium. Integrate milk, yogurt, and cheese into your diet. And don’t limit yourself to cow’s dairy products! For fun flavor, choose products such as goat cheese. Goat cheese has more calcium and protein per serving, with fewer calories and less fat! Your teeth (and your taste buds) will thank you. If for some reason you need to limit dairy, there are many other calcium-filled foods, such as dark leafy greens, beans, and tofu. Calcium-fortified foods, such as orange juice and some breakfast cereals, are also beneficial for your teeth. Be careful with orange juice, as the acids can erode tooth enamel. Drink orange juice with a tall glass of water, and ideally with a meal. This helps neutralize the acids present in the juice.

As you follow these food guidelines, be sure to support your smile with regular dental visits. This will help keep your smile strong and healthy.
